Each year, NFAR awards grant funding to San Diego educators to provide them with the educational tools that support the specialized needs of their students with autism. Last week, we announced the 64 San Diego Autism Teachers Grant recipients for the 2011/2012 school year.
The grants were created to fill a gap in funding that is not otherwise available. While most students with an autism diagnosis have great potential, they often have different learning styles and curriculum support needs.
With current school budget cuts, the need for funding was greater than ever. To help meet these needs, NFAR increased the total funding for Teacher Grants to $29,500, nearly double that of previous years. The average grant is $500 per classroom. These funds are made possible by the annual San Diego Race for Autism.
This year’s Teachers Grant recipients are from following school districts: Chula Vista Elementary, Del Mar Union, Encinitas Union, Fallbrook Union Elementary, Grossmont Unified High, La Mesa/Spring Valley, Lemon Grove, Mountain Empire Unified, Oceanside Unified, Poway Unified, San Diego Unified, San Marcos Unified, South Bay Union and Sweetwater Union High.
To date, NFAR has awarded 254 Teacher's grants to educators across 24 different San Diego school districts, as well as to Rady Children’s Hospital Alexa’s PLAYC Toddler and PreK Programs, The Institute for Effective Education, Banyan Tree Foundations Academy, TERI’s The Country School, Sierra Academy and Vista Hill’s Stein Education Center.
