Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S., and one of the most critical issues of our time. Approximately one in every 110 children in the United States has autism or a closely related disorder, making it more prevalent than childhood cancers, juvenile diabetes and Down Syndrome COMBINED. And, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Health, the rate of autism is continuing to increase by a startling 10 - 17% every year.
The good news is that children with autism can learn and improve, sometimes significantly, with the proper treatments and interventions. Yet, effective programs and services for children with autism are not always available.
We can help. NFAR was founded in December 2003 to aid in the development, expansion and support of effective treatment programs and services that improve the quality of life for children and young adults with autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders.
To date, NFAR has awarded nearly half of a million dollars in grants and direct services throughout San Diego County. Supported primarily through the fundraising and proceeds of our annual Race for Autism in Balboa Park, NFAR has funded more than 225 initiatives in the areas of:Â
- early identification and intervention
- educational materials, equipment and technology
- educational workshops and parent training
- treatment programs
- after-school activities
- adult transition programs
These programs are helping those with autism by creating new learning and social opportunities, funding studies to improve treatment and assure efficacy of treatment programs, supporting outreach to underserved populations and providing for the immediate needs at the classroom level.
